Proteas -- Exotic Prehistoric Flowering Plants

Proteas -- Exotic Prehistoric Flowering PlantsProtea is the botanical and common name of these rare South African flowering plants, also called sugarbushes. The name Protea comes from the Greek god Proteus, the shape-changing sea god (Neptune’s son), because Protea species have so many sizes, shapes and colors. The Protea family is ancient, its predecessors originating in Gondwana, 300 million years ago. Over 90% of Protea species occur only in a band of coastal mountains in the Eastern and Western Cape Provinces of South Africa.

Proteas originally attracted botanists visiting the Cape of Good Hope in the 1600s. becoming popular among European horticulturists and botanists from the 1700s onward.
