![]() | Macrozamia riedlei Plants![]() Macrozamia riedlei is an ideal cycad for Southern California and other arid climates, because it likes hot and dry summers and cool, wet winters. Native to Western Australia, Macrozamia riedlei is one of the only cycads native to a Mediterranean climate . Its fine-textured blue-green leaves form a deep V shape on gracefully arching leaves. It tolerates frost, extreme heat and drought. Macrozamia riedlei is a medium-to-large sized cycad, growing a mostly subterranean caudex (trunk) of 2-3 feet in length, of which usually only 1 foot is above ground. Its leaves are 4-7 feet long, and arch out slightly from the trunk.
Commonly known as the Zamia Palm in Western Australia,
Macrozamia riedlei
grows in habitat in iron rich soils, and in
Eucalyptus marginata
(Jarrah) forests.
