This is a rare, long-leafed plant from Msinga, Kwazulu Natal. Encephalartos msinganus is a medium-to-large sized cycad with dark green leaves. It often grows in clumps with trunks up to 10 feet tall. It has dark glossy green and rigid leaves, which grow to 5 feet long, slightly arching.

E. msinganus is part of a group of species comprising E. aemulans, E. altensteinii, E. natalensis, E. lebomboensis, and E. senticosus. It has dark glossy green and rigid leaves, the hard, pungent, and relatively narrow leaflets usually (but not invariably) having teeth on both margins, the lower leaflets becoming progressively smaller towards the leaf base, and only a very short petiole. When not in cone, it is not at all easy to distinguish these species. The male cones resemble those of E. altensteinii, E. natalensis, and E. senticosus.

This plantís native habitat is in one small area near Msinga, in central KwaZulu-Natal, between altitudes of 1000 feet and 4000 feet above sea level. E. msinganus grows in grass lands, and cliffs on north facing slopes. As a southern hemisphere cycad, this orientation ensures that the plant grows in a consistently sunny location year-round. It likes a sunny, very well drained position.
