It is a remarkable succulent which forms clumps of 3-4 foot tall gray-brown stems that often branch near their base. Plant in a well drained soil in full sun near the coast to partial shade inland. This plant benefits from deep but infrequent watering.

Aeonium 'Zwartkop' is a cool and moderate weather growing species that becomes semi-dormant in summer and early fall when its foliage is darkest. Aeonium 'Zwartkop' needs to be protected from hard frost as it will freeze at below 28° F.

Aeonium 'Zwartkop' AKA Aeonium 'Schwarzkopf' comes from the Canary Islands. The origin of its name, either the Dutch "Zwartkop" or the German “Schwartzkopf” (or “Schwarzkopf” means “black head”. It is an excellent background plant to “frame” more structural companion plants to their advantage.
