| Zamia SeedsThe name Zamia comes from the Greek azaniae, meaning "a pine cone". This genus diverges from the norm, with generally subterranean trunks, and leaves considerably larger than their caudexes. Many Zamia species also grow in conditions almost devoid of soil. Zamia pseudoparasitica specifically can grow on tree limbs, in the same fashion as an orchid. The Zamia genus consists of over 50 species, native to South, Central & North America. Among its distinguishing characteristics are: • pinnate leaves • distinctly separate leaflets without a midrib • non-spiny cone scales in vertical rows WHAT IS CAUDEX SIZE? You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.
