Not C. rumphii--The Real Thing! Sow Now! These are all seedlings, now. Please click your way over to the seedling section of this website. (Please click on the picture to enlarge it for a detailed view) We have finally received our shipment of Cycas circinalis, direct from India. We cut open a good number of them, and they are not only good seeds (I project 80% germination rate) but they are just about to sprout (May 2002)! These are the true Cycas circinalis (not C. rumphii), which are being wild collected from their habitat, in southern India. Attached is a photograph sent by the seller, of the Cycas circinalis in habitat. Here is the seller's description, including a comparison with C. rumphii: "Cycas circinalis is from our scrub Jungles, though we have some populations in the Tropical rainforest areas. Leaves of this are narrower than C.rumphii, paler green , very oily in texture. . . Cycas rumphii is larger and comes from the Andaman Islands & Malayan Archipilago mostly in the high rainfall areas, with 100-300 inches per year." We'll offer the seeds at the following prices: $0.95 per seed for up to 100 seeds $0.75 for 100-199 seeds $0.70 for 200 or more seeds To these prices we will add actual shipping costs, shipping, which compares favorably with the $90-$100 per 100 seeds being offered elsewhere. |

These are all seedlings, now. Please click your way over to the seedling section of this website. These are currently out of stock. (Please click on the image to enlarge it.) This cycad was discovered only a few years ago growing on limestone slopes in cloud forests up to 4000 feet above sea level, along the Red River in China's Yunnan province. It develops a short trunk up to 10 feet tall and an upright crown of large, bright green leaves with up to 300 wide, undulate leaflets. The large seeds are easy to sprout and seedling growth is fast. We believe this to be a very cold-tolerant cycad. We are offering them as follows: Single seed price: $10/seed 10+ seeds: $5 Plus shipping to your door. |
This charming plant is one of the smallest species in the genus Cycas. In its native northern Vietnam and southern China, it grows in cracks of steep limestone cliffs practically without soil. Although it is quite popular as an ornamental in China, Cycas sexseminifera is still virtually unknown in cultivation elsewhere. It is an excellent species for growing in pots or as a bonsai. We are offering these seeds as follows, plus shipping: |
Sow Now Sorry...These are all seedlings, now. Please click your way over to the seedling section of this website. This plant is distinguished by flat leaves with a very short petiole and basal leaflets gradually reducing in size towards the spines, and an incredibly unique bulbous base, which flares out, becoming broad and plate-like in older plants. Pictured is a mature specimen of this plant. Seeds are priced as follows: $0.70 per seed for 50 seeds $0.65 per seed for 100+ seeds $0.60 per seed for 200+ seeds Plus postage. Sorry...These are all seedlings, now. Please click your way over to the seedling section of this website. This is the rare silver form variety of Cycas siamensis. Its emergent leaves are silver in color, as you can see from the image here. The leaves retain much of this coloring over time. I am not aware of any seeds of this species currently available in the U.S., so this is a special opportunity. These seeds have been imported in compliance with CITES and USDA regulations. If you are outside the USA, there may be additional costs to export the seeds to you. Please inquire. 1-4 seeds: $5.00 per seed 10-49 seeds: $3.00 per seed 50-99 seeds: $1.50 per seed 100-199 seeds: $1.25 per seed 200+ seeds: $1.00 per seed October 2002: These seeds have now germinated. These are all seedlings, now. Please click your way over to the seedling section of this website. This rare form of Dioon is similar to D. merolae, but faster growing and larger in most aspects (particularly the seeds which are up to 50% larger). It has a dense, often golden, tomentum (fuzz, for you non-botanists) that covers the emerging new leaves. This cycad is native to the state of Oaxaca in Mexico. The original form of Dioon merolae comes from the Chiapas state in Mexico. The Oaxaca form is found most predominantly near a town called Santiago La Chiguiri. Pictured above is a seedling from the collection of Darin Yeatman, the fine gentleman who runs the Cycad Society Seedbank. These seeds are available at the following prices (plus shipping): Up to 20 seeds $4.00 per seed 20-99 seeds $3.00 per seed 100-199 seeds $2.50 per seed 200+ seeds $2.00 per seed |
Sow August 2002 Sorry...These are all seedlings, now. Please click your way over to the seedling section of this website. We have secured a limited number of the seeds of a wide-leafed form of E. ferox, with large leaflets—from two to three inches wide and more than 7 inches long! If you look above at the picture on the left, you'll see the size of these leaflets. The picture on the right is NOT of our plant, but rather, a more typical ferox, with 1 inch wide leaflets. In the wild, these plants are found in Mozambique, as opposed to the forms found further south in South Africa. Encephalartos ferox puts out a bright red cone at maturity. Its stem/caudex can grow to over three feet tall, and 10-12 inches diameter. Mature leaves grow to 3-6 feet in length, and are a highly glossy, dark green. These are artificially propagated, freshly harvested seeds are from a domestic U.S. domestic source, and may be shipped within the United States only. We have a very limited number of these seeds, and you may purchase them at the following prices per seed: 10-49 seeds: $3.50 Per Seed 50-99 seeds: $3.00 Per Seed 100+ seeds: $2.50 Per Seed These seeds have been harvested from artificially propagated plants in the United States. They are available for sale in the U.S.A. only at this time, as the permitting process for export is unfortunately quite extensive and not cost-effective at this point. |
Blue Leafed "Joubertina" Form Sorry...These are all seedlings, now. Please click your way over to the seedling section of this website. This is the ultra-rare blue form of Encephalartos longifolius, a cycad native to the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. Unlike the more common form of this species, which has grey-green leaves, this form has distinctly blue-grey leaves, with a slight green accent. Like the more common form, the mature form of this plant features entire leaflets arranged in a V-shape, which overlap at the end of the leaf. Mature forms of this plant grow trunks up to 12 feet tall. Leaves are 3-6 feet long, with leaflets arranged in a V shape, up to 8 inches long. Above, you'll see a picture of the seedlings we're also selling, plus a picture I took of a mature specimen in the Eastern Cape, in a town called Patensie. This specimen is located just outside a citrus packing facility, and has about one foot of clear trunk height. These seeds were imported in accordance with all pertinent USDA and CITES regulations. They will be shipped to all U.S. domestic customers at the following prices, plus shipping. 1-4 Seeds: $10 per seed 5-9 Seeds: $8 per seed 10-49 Seeds: $6 per seed 50-99 Seeds: $5 per seed Although these seeds are artificially propagated CITES Appendix I, and they may be re-exported overseas to non-U.S.A. customers, in CITES member countries, subject to U.S. Government approval, we have discovered that the process is very time-consuming and arduous. Therefore, we are no longer attempting to re-export these seeds. |
Rare Central African Cycad! Sow Now (May-June 2002) These are all seedlings, now. Please click your way over to the seedling section of this website. We have just obtained a limited supply of seeds of the very rare Central African Cycad, Encephalartos macrostrobilus. These seeds were obtained in a trade, and were produced from a domestic source, artificially propagated here in the USA. We have previously tested these seeds from this same source, and have had a 90% germination rate. E. macrostrobilus is found near Madi Opei, in the far northwest of Uganda, very near the Sudan border. It grows in poor, sandy soil along river beds in light shade, among granite boulders in a savannah environment. This cycad grows in a remote and rather dangerous locale, so, while it is probably not in danger of extinction, it is extremely hard to get to, and there may be other undiscovered populations of this plant yet to be discovered. Stems of this species reach 8 feet tall, 12-18 inches in diameter. The rigid, erect leaves grow to 6-7 feet long, with 30-60 leaves flushing in each new whorl, recurving at the ends. Since this species is virtually unknown in cultivation, it is extremely rare. Seedlings currently sell for $125-$200 apiece, for 1 ½ to 2 year old plants, so I believe that an investment in this seed will pay off dramatically. Our pricing is as follows: 1-9 seeds: $10.00 apiece 10-49 seeds: $8.00 apiece 50-99 seeds: $7.50 apiece 100 seeds: $7.00 apiece To enable every interested party to get some seeds, we are limiting individual purchases to 100 seeds maximum. These seeds have been harvested from artificially propagated plants in the United States. They are available for sale in the U.S.A. only at this time, as the permitting process for export is unfortunately quite extensive and not cost-effective at this point. |
Sow April-May 2003 These are all seedlings, now. Please click your way over to the seedling section of this website. (Please click on the image to enlarge it.) This plant, also known as Encephalartos bandula, is a member of the Encephalartos manikensis complex, a group of large cycads growing in Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Plants in this complex have fat, straight trunks of up to 5 feet in height, leaves with short petioles, medium-sized spiny leaflets and green cones. In the picture here, you will see a female plant, with two cones, next to which has been placed a male cone, for reference. We have also attached a leaflet picture for you to see its size. Encephalartos bandula grows in the Bandula Hill region of Mozambique. Its features are significantly different from other forms of this species. This species is relatively unique among Encephalartos, in that the male and female cones of this species are similar. Also, its leaflets are generally shorter and wider than other forms. Although there are no firm proposals to name this a unique species, there is a possibility of it being considered a different species or a sub-species at some point in the future. We have a very limited number of these seeds available at the following prices: 1-4 Seeds: $10.00/seed 5-9 Seeds: $7.00/seed 10-49 Seeds: $5/seed 50-99 Seeds: $3.50/seed 100+ Seeds: $2.50/seed These seeds have been harvested from artificially propagated plants in the United States. They are available for sale in the U.S.A. only at this time, as the permitting process for export is unfortunately quite extensive and not cost-effective at this point. |
Sow July-August 2002 These are all seedlings, now. Please click your way over to the seedling section of this website. This plant is a marvelous cross between Encephalartos manikensis and Encephalartos gratus. E. manikensis is a large cycad that grows in Zimbabwe and Mozambique. E. gratus is found in northern Mozambique and southeastern Malawi, on steep slopes and in gorges near streams. This hybrid resulting from these two plants is a marvelous plant, exhibiting some of the best traits of each. Leaflets grow to 9 inches in length, broad, with small spines. We have attached a photograph of the plant, as well as a leaflet picture for you to see its size. These seeds have been harvested from artificially propagated plants in the United States. They are available for sale in the U.S.A. only at this time, as the permitting process for export is unfortunately quite extensive and not cost-effective at this point. We have a very limited number of these seeds available at the following prices: Single Seed Price: $5/seed 10-49 Seeds: $3/seed 50+ Seeds: $2.50/seed These seeds have been harvested from artificially propagated plants in the United States. They are available for sale in the U.S.A. only at this time, as the permitting process for export is unfortunately quite extensive and not cost-effective at this point. |
These are all seedlings, now. Please click your way over to the seedling section of this website. This extremely rare cycad grows in the Barberton region, on the border between South Africa and Swaziland. Its habitat is now a protected National Park region, because of its scarcity. Its current existing habitat is 'protected' by a pine forest, which effectively hides the plants. Nevertheless this plant is considered highly vulnerable. It puts forth 6 foot long, dark green leaves, with the tips curving gently upwards adn inwards. There is a slight leaflet overlap, and the leaflets have just a few spines, with mature plants often having entire leaflets. These seeds are domestically produced from seeds grown from plants in California. At this point, they are not exportable. They are priced as follows: 1-4 seeds: $10.00 per seed 5-9 seeds: $8.00 per seed 10-49 seeds: $6.00 per seed 50+ seeds: $5.00 |
This plant is among the fastest growing cycads. |
| Macrozamia fraseri Seeds These are all seedlings, now. Please click your way over to the seedling section of this website. Originally named Macrozamia 'species Enneabba', this lovely plant with blue-green leaves is native to southwestern Australia, from Enneabba south to Perth in shrublands and heath, usually on deep sand. M. fraseri is distinguished from the other western Australian Macrozamias by its robust growth, often forming a large above-ground trunk, vs. the subterranean trunks of others in this region. It has strongly keeled (“V shaped”)leaves, densely woolly crowns and large cones. 10+ Seeds: $5 apiece 50+ Seeds: $4 apiece 100+ Seeds: $2.50 apiece |
This species is from a town in Mexico named Alvarado. It grows 350 yards from the ocean. It is a relatively cold-hardy zamia, with thick, leathery leaflets, which have a blue-grey cast to them. These seeds are descended from plants which grew from seeds donated by Loran Whitelock many years ago to the Hawaiian botanical gardens. Below, you will see a scan of one leaf, which has flattened somewhat, as is has been placed on a scanner. The leaves are more of a V or keel-shape. We have a very limited number of these, which we are offering at the following prices, plus shipping: 10+ Seeds:$2.00 per seed |
These seeds have grown into seedlings and plants now. Please click on Zamia pumila Plants to see these. Zamia pumila is a clumping cycad native to the Dominican Republic. Over time, it forms a multi-branched cluster, with large, tuberous root system, which is actually an extension of the above-ground stems. Its synonym (at least in Florida) has been Z. dominiquensis, in part, to differentiate it from the more common Florida native “Coontie”, Zamia floridana. The Dominican plant grows larger leaves and leaflets than Z. floridana. Its leaves are also more upright, as opposed to Z. floridana, whose leaves are more lax and procumbent. Further, Z. pumila has reddish seed cones which taper to a distinct slender point, and leaflets with distinct teeth at their tips. The habitat for Z. pumila appears to be limited to portions of Central Cuba and the Dominican Republic having been largely eradicated in Southern Puerto Rico and Haiti by population growth and farming efforts. This species tends to grow faster than many other Zamias, developing into an attractive clumping plant over time. It does well in well-drained, sandy soil, and filtered light/partial shade. |

This past year, we invested a considerable amount of time and money developing relationships and contacts within the country of Mozambique. As the result of these efforts, and working closely with government officials and growers, we are now able to offer a select number of artificially propagated rare species not offered before in any quantities in the U.S.A. The specimens offered here are fully-sprouted seeds, with 1-4 inches of root development, and some with the beginnings of leaves on them. Within the next month or so, we will be doubling these prices to offer them as seeds, so this is a limited-time offering. Please take advantage of these prices for your own benefit. |
As a result, A&A Cycads is pleased to offer these seeds which we have imported and are importing from Mozambique under CITES permits. Please note that due to the special requirements of the Mozambique CITES authorities, A&A Cycads is the only entity with the legal authority to import the seeds into the USA. I have personally met with the head CITES officials in that country and executed agreements with those authorities allowing the import of these seeds into the USA. These agreements go beyond the normal CITES documents, and are necessary for any importer to bring in these seeds legally into the USA. Others from overseas who are offering to export similar seeds to the USA from 3rd countries DO NOT have the authorization from the country of origin (Mozambique) to export to the USA, and if one imports from those parties, it is likely to be a CITES violation. You may contact me if you would like to receive the details regarding this matter. Please Note: These are only available to buyers within the USA at this time. |

Click on the photo here for an image of how this plant looks as a juvenile. This past year was the first time these seeds have been offered in the USA for many years, and we stocked out, leaving some of our good customers without seeds. Well, we have them again, at a great price, as you'll see below. Cycas angulata is distinguished from other Australian species by its very robust habit and its keeled ("Veed") leaves with long, narrow, blue-grey leaflets arranged at a relatively low angle to the rachis. It is best planted in the ground or a deep pot to allow its fast-growing taproot room to develop properly. C. angulata does not produce its first leaf until its first root has formed. The plants leaves are grey-green (bluish when new), semiglossy, 4-8 ft. long, moderately keeled and with leaflets not gradually reducing to spines. These seeds may be shipped to addresses outside the USA. Please verify with your local authorities whether you will require a Phytosanitary Permit. |

Among other features, compared to Dioon edule, D. angustifolium has finer leaflets, which are bluer when young. They often emerge bright a bright orange-red color, before fading to a bluish-green. According to the Palm and Cycad Society of Australia (PACSOA) website, D. angustifolium "is often regarded as a more attractive garden plant" than D. edule. |
