"Palm Saturday" will take place on April 8, at the San Francisco Botanical Garden at Strybing Arboretum, from 10:00 till 2:00 Ninth Ave at Lincoln Way.

I will be participating in the days events, by doing a workshop on how to grow Cycads in the California climate, subtitled "How to Really Preserve and Not Kill the Endangered Species We’re Growing, and Why We Should". This discussion will feature essential information on growing and nurturing cycads suitable for Bay Area gardens.

The presentation will be preceded and followed by a sale including rare and choice cold-hardy cycads that will do well in the SF Bay Area and environs. These will range from seedlings to larger specimens, many of which have not been made available in Northern California, at least in these sizes, rare species and low prices.

Here is the schedule for the day:

10:00 - 10:30 - Arrivals, palm & cycad table sale, book table sale and silent auction bids

10:30 - 11:30 - David Leaser speaks on Palms for Small Spaces (and/or other related topics)

11:30 - 12:00 - Plant and book sale table open

12:00 - 1:00 - Maurice Levin speaks on Cycads

1:00 - 2:00 - Conclusion of sale, final auction bids accepted, sale and auction ends

Please click on the link below to see a list I've prepared of some of the plants I plant to bring and you may contact me in advance of the event if you have a specific plant you want.

Thanks.

WHAT IS CAUDEX SIZE?

You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.

Approximate
Caudex Size
Container
Size
Up to 1 Inch 1-2 Gallon
1 Inch to 3 Inch 3-5 Gallon
3 Inches to 7 Inches 15 Gallon
7 Inches and Up 24 Inch Box
