| Lepidozamia SeedlingsThe tallest known cycad, Lepidozamia has been recorded at heights of 17.5 meters or 57.4 feet. Lepidozamia comes from the Greek lepidos, which means scaly (referring to the scalelike leaf bases and cataphylls on the stem) and zamia. There are only two species in this genus, both of which grow in eastern Australia. These plants are tall growing over time, spineless (rare for a cycad) with leaflets that come out of the upper side of the leaf. Lepidozamia hopei has wider leaflets and grows slightly faster and larger, is native to a tropical climate, and is suited to a more subtropical and tropical climate than L. peroffskyana, which is much more cold-tolerant, slightly slower growing, with narrower leaflets.
WHAT IS CAUDEX SIZE? You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.
