John Feldman of Ecocentrix Landscape Architecture needed a statement plant for his landscape design in a limited space, framing a doorway in this Manhattan Beach residence. The plant needed to be very vertical, and a “Statement Plant” to go in a fairly narrow but long spot. It also had to be able to handle some wind, for a residence right near the ocean in Manhattan Beach. We met John at the site, along with Mike Garcia, the landscape contractor, and advised on the installation.

WHAT IS CAUDEX SIZE?

You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.

Approximate
Caudex Size
Container
Size
Up to 1 Inch 1-2 Gallon
1 Inch to 3 Inch 3-5 Gallon
3 Inches to 7 Inches 15 Gallon
7 Inches and Up 24 Inch Box
