It is very rare in cultivation, particularly in some of the larger sizes we have. Its trunk grows to 15 feet tall, 1 ½ feet in diameter, with leaves up to 14 feet long, and leaflets up to 12 inches long and 1 inch wide. Whitelock’s Cycad is named in honor of Loran Whitelock of Los Angeles, California, a well-known cycad horticulturalist. It is distinguished among the central African species by its stiff dark green leaves with hooked, well-spaced, toothed leaflets that curve towards the leaf tip and carry more than 3 teeth on each margin. Native to Uganda, it thrives in direct or filtered sun. It can handle temperatures down below freezing, but prefers a frost-free environment. WHAT IS CAUDEX SIZE? You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.
