It has a very small habitat, on a farm in Doornkop, 15 miles north of the town of Middelburg. It is part of the group of blue-leaved Transvaal cycads. You will note a beautiful mature specimen of this species in the picture above. E. middelburgensis is distinguished within the group of blue-leaved Transvaal species by its long straight leaves with straight tips, entire leaflets, the lower 4-6 pairs of leaflets, a clear petiole 35 40 cm long, and green cones with a fine brown fuzz. WHAT IS CAUDEX SIZE? You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.
