E. lehmanii is the hardiest and most drought-resistant of the cycads of southern Africa. It is probably the bluest plant from the famous group of blue cycads from South Africa.
Encephalartos lehmanii prefers full sun, in a very well drained soil. In habitat, it grows in sandstone slopes in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.
It is frost tolerant.
