It grows fast, to become a true giant, prehistoric looking plant! According to author Douglas Goode, its trunk reaches 15-20 meters (50-60 feet) long! It eventually becomes so huge that its sheer weight causes Encephalartos laurentianus to recline and grow along the ground. Encephalartos laurentianus comes from the Eastern Congo and northeastern Angola, areas considered impenetrable to outsiders, due to their remoteness and danger. Thus the rarity of this plant. In terms of size, Encephalartos laurentianus achieves leaves of up to 15-25 feet long, with leaflets reaching 15-20 inches long. Please see the picture above for a picture of a "young plant", according to Douglas Goode. These plants are available for shipment within the Domestic USA only, at this time. WHAT IS CAUDEX SIZE? You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.
