| This photo is of young sprouts of these plants. The seedlings for sale are multi-leaf seedlings at this point. This Mozambique form of E. ferox has not yet been imported into the USA, to our knowledge. Its original habitat is near the the town of Chiputo, not far from the Indian Ocean coast. Its leaf form is rather wavy, not as flat as the South African forms, yet not curly. Mature Encephalartos ferox puts out a bright red cone. Its caudex is partly subterranean, but can grow to over three feet tall, and 10-12 inches diameter. Mature leaves grow to 3-6 feet in length, and are a highly glossy, dark green. WHAT IS CAUDEX SIZE? You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.
