Encephalartos feroxEncephalartos ferox is one of the most beautiful and interesting African cycads, featuring bright red cones and glossy leaves with sharp lobes. Also known as the "Holly Leaf Cycad", Encephalartos ferox grows along the coastline of South Africa and Mozambique, often in pure sand. The species name "ferox" is Latin for "ferocious", due to its thorny leaves.

In habitat, Encephalartos ferox usually grows under tree cover, which protects it from direct sun, because it does best growing in part shade. The Holly Leaf Cycad is fast growing and relatively easy to grow. Encephalartos ferox does require excellent drainage and enjoys deep sandy soil. Its trunk can reach 3+ ft in height over time, with leaves up to 6 feet long. Its leaflets grow up to 6 inches long and 3 inches wide.
