Encephalartos friderici-guilielmi is an attractive, small-to-medium-sized cycad with straight silver-blue-green leaves and fine leaflets. Its leaves grow to 3-4 feet long, with 4 leaflets inch long closely spaced pointed.
Encephalartos friderici-guilielmi grows on exposed slopes in the mountains of the Eastern Cape in South Africa, with hot dry summers and cold winters with frost and snow. In spite of this harsh habitat, Encephalartos friderici-guilielmi adapts well to different climates, if there is sufficient sun. Once established, it grows vigorously and cultivates easily.
Encephalartos friderici-guilielmi does well as a container plant or grown as a feature garden plant, particularly if surrounded by low-growing succulents. It benefits from full sun and good drainage, and does not like deep shade. Its caudex crown is covered in loose brown hair, particularly when the plant produces new leaves and cones. You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.
