Encephalartos ferox puts out a bright red cone at maturity. Its stem/caudex can grow to over three feet tall, and 10-12 inches diameter. Mature leaves can grow to 6 feet in length, and are a highly glossy, dark green. WHAT IS CAUDEX SIZE? You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.
