Encephalartos arenarius

Encephalartos arenariusAlso known as the Alexandria Cycad, Encephalartos arenarius is native to the coastal sand dunes of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. It is a medium-sized cycad, with a trunk to about 4-5 ft. long, either erect, or reclining.

Encephalartos arenarius requires excellent drainage (i.e. sandy soil), and prefers light shade or moderate sun. It should be protected from frost.

The Encephalartos arenarius is distinguished by the slightly dull silver or grey sheen of its adult leaves, and its gracefully lobed leaflets.

Three forms of this plant are currently available in the nursery, two of which have a traditional form, one with Blue Leaves, the other with the more traditional Blue-Green Leaves.

A third "form", the Encephalartos arenarius "Blue Form", takes on a very different form as a mature plant, as you will see in photos listed below. However, juvenile plants of this species can look very similar to the "Blue Leaf" form.

WHAT IS CAUDEX SIZE?

You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.

Approximate
Caudex Size
Container
Size
Up to 1 Inch 1-2 Gallon
1 Inch to 3 Inch 3-5 Gallon
3 Inches to 7 Inches 15 Gallon
7 Inches and Up 24 Inch Box
