Within the Dioon edule complex, Palma Sola is faster growing and larger in nearly all ways. Its mature overall plant size is more substantial (up to 6 feet tall) - the leaf width and spacing are greater (up to 3 feet long leaves) - and its seed cone is more sizeable. Its distinctive stiff and comb-like bluish green leaves, which are significantly more keeled (V-shaped) than other plants in the complex, making this perhaps the most impressive Dioon in the edule complex. Full sun exposure will cause a more blue leaf color. The Palma Sola Dioon grows well in both container and garden. Good drainage is important for this plant. The Dioon edule complex is a group of sun-loving plants popular for their tolerance of heat and cold and attractive, stiff, blue- to gray-green colored leaves. They grow best in part to full sun. WHAT IS CAUDEX SIZE? You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.
