| Dioon Species: Dioon Plants, Dioon Seedlings and Dioon SeedsThe name Dioon comes from the Greek meaning "two eggs" and refers to these rare plants’ female cones, which have two seeds attached to each sporophyll. Many species of in the genus Dioon come from the deserts and mountains of Mexico, meaning they are heat-tolerant, cold-tolerant and drought-resistant plants. Three exceptions to this rule are Dioon mejiae (from Honduras) and Dioon spinulosum and Dioon rzedowskii (both from Mexico). Those three species are subtropical, growing taller, with wider, darker green leaflets, and prefer humidity and some afternoon shade. Currently these plants are available for sale in the USA only. WHAT IS CAUDEX SIZE? You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.
