| Cycas platyphyllaThis is one of the beautiful blue, heat and drought-tolerant Australian cycas species. We have just arranged to bring these seedlings in from Australia. They are quite striking, as you can see from the picture, with their blue-green foliage. Cycas platyphylla is distinguished from other Australian species by the initially bluish leaves becoming grey-green, or deeply green over time. It has moderately broad leaflets with recurved margins. Its leaves become highly glossy or semiglossy, are 20-40 inches long, are strongly keeled with 120-260 leaflets covered with orange tomentum (fuzz). The basal leaflets do not gradually reduce to spines. Its median leaflets are strongly discolorous, and somewhat revolute, similar to the Cycas revoluta (Sago Palm). WHAT IS CAUDEX SIZE? You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.
