| This cycad grows relatively quickly to a large size. It is native to southern Vietnam, southern Burma and southern Thailand, extending south into peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra. Its long bright green, highly glossy leaves grow to 5-8 feet long. They are flat (not keeled) long and rather wide (3/4 inch). This is one of the Cycas species with seeds that all float, their buoyancy allowing them to be distributed by sea currents. The species name comes from the Latin, litoralis, meaining "of the sea-shore", referring to this plant's coastal habitat. Previously thought to be a very robust form of as Cycas rumphii, this plant was recognised as a distinct species in 1995, and was formally described in 1999.
WHAT IS CAUDEX SIZE? You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.
