Cycads in Pots

The original horticultural use of cycads was in pots. The royalty of Europe would send their minions to the wilds of Africa, Asia and Australia to gather specimens for them to grow in their large glass houses. And, they would place their cycads in large stone urns, and nurture them like the rare exotics these plants are.

If you are growing a cycad in a pot and would like us to feature it on this page, please contact us at info@cycads.com.

WHAT IS CAUDEX SIZE?

You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.

Approximate
Caudex Size
Container
Size
Up to 1 Inch 1-2 Gallon
1 Inch to 3 Inch 3-5 Gallon
3 Inches to 7 Inches 15 Gallon
7 Inches and Up 24 Inch Box
