| (Please click on the image to enlarge it.) This is a rare cycad that was discovered only a few years ago growing on limestone slopes in cloud forests up to 4000 feet above sea level, along the Red River in China's Yunnan province. It develops a short trunk up to 10 feet tall and an upright crown of large, bright green leaves with up to 300 wide, undulate leaflets. We believe this to be a very cold-tolerant cycad. Elsewhere it sells for $65, but we offer it for $49. WHAT IS CAUDEX SIZE? You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.
