Cycas cairnsiana grows from 3-6 feet tall, with a thick caudex, swelling toward the base. It bears heavy crowns of glaucous blue fronds arching bow-like from the apex of the caudex. The leaflets form a deep vee along the length of the leaf. Leaves grow to 5-6 feet long. When new fronds push out, they are a light blue uncoiling from a rusty colored stem, surrounded by a dense but very loose orange tomentum (fuzz) on new growth. This plant is frost-hardy, and should respond well to cultivation in cooler areas. It enjoys a hot, dry, very well drained position and dislikes high humidity. These seedlings are from seed acquired via import with full documentation. Plants will be delivered bare root, with instructions for re-establishing them into healthy specimens. WHAT IS CAUDEX SIZE? You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.
