Ceratozamia is a genus including 16 named species (plus numerous undescribed ones) native to Mexico, Guatemala & Belize. Its name comes from the Greek ceratos (horned), and Zamia (a previously named cycad), which refers to the horned cone scales on mature plants. Ceratozamia was named by 19th Century French botanist and palaeobiologist Adolphe Theodore Brongniart in 1846.

Among the distinguishing characteristics of this species are its pinnate (feather-like) leaves, which lack a midrib, and its horned, spiny cones.

Ceratozamia tends to be less “formal” looking than other cycads, with shiny, usually darker green leaves that form a very natural-looking arched spread.
