It grows in the cloud forests of the Sierra Madre Oriental of Mexico, underneath oak trees. 10+ Seeds: $5.00 apiece 20+ Seeds: $4.00 apiece 50+ Seeds: $3.00 apiece Over time, this plant develops an emergent trunk up to 8 inches long, and 4 inches in diameter. New leaves emerge bronze, red or chocolate brown, hardening off to light or bright green, are semiglossy, and grow to 2-4 feet long. They are flat (not keeled), with 30-80 leaflets per leaf, with unarmed leaf stalks. The leaflets are lance-shaped, asymmetric, and are broadest above middle, growing 6 inches long, ¾” to 1 ½ inches wide. WHAT IS CAUDEX SIZE? You’ll notice we list and price cycads by caudex size. The caudex is a cycad’s woody, bulblike trunk, and caudex size is a good measure of cycad age. The chart below can give you a rough idea of how this translates to pot size.
