The natural habitat of these intriguing Australian plants is in the low coastal areas of Queensland, with occasional populations developing on the Atherton Tablelands. Sir George F. Bowen (1821-1899), who served as the first governor of Queensland at the time when the genus was described, was honored with the naming of the genus. But by far the most distinctive element of these plants are the leaves, which are bipinnate and, occasionally in the case of Bowenia serrulata, even tripinnate.
